My first introduction to painting was in a summer painting class during grade school. I had no idea what I was doing, and the results were of course, a mess. I had no real interest in painting - it just seemed too complicated. My first artistic passion was music composition and performance, and that is the path I pursued, leading to a career in music and audio for film and advertising. Then life changed a few years ago. A critical illness and flirt with death altered not just my perspective ( which seems trite to say anyway), but how I experienced enjoyment and peace in life. At first, I couldn’t summon the energy and enthusiasm to write music the way I used to. I didn’t even listen to music. I only wanted silence. Something had changed, and it wasn’t just perspective. It was tangible and physical, and it wasn’t going to simply return to normal overnight.
Seeking something to begin the rebuilding process, I started wood carving, and enjoyed it very much. I picked up a basic oil paint set at Hobby Lobby to start painting my carvings, and enjoyed that too. Then it occurred to me that it might be fun to start painting on canvas. Now, less than a year later, I’ve found a new artistic passion - landscape art.
I enjoy working in both oil and acrylic, and alternate between the two. I strive to depict the beauty of the land around in ways that can’t be seen now - as the land was or might have been before it was settled, built upon, and altered. I had always been inspired by landscapes, and planned many hiking trips around the grandest panoramas. My music has often been inspired by magnificent scenery. And now, through painting, I have a new enthusiasm for creating stories of land around us.
